Full Form of CDS
Combined Defence Services, or CDS for short, is an exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in India to recruit officers into the Indian Armed Forces. It is held twice a year, in February and November. The exam tests candidates on their knowledge of various topics related to the defence services such as Military History, Geography and Current Affairs.
The Combined Defence Services (CDS) exam is divided into two parts: Written Examination and Interviews & Personality Tests. The written examination tests applicants’ knowledge in the following four subjects: English, General Knowledge & Current Affairs, Elementary Mathematics and Military Aptitude Test. All candidates must pass this stage to be eligible for further recruitment process.
In order to apply for the CDS Exam, applicants must be between 19-25 years of age. They must also possess at least a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or its equivalent qualification from any institution approved by the UPSC Board of Examinations. Candidates can apply either online or via post. Those opting for online application must have a valid e-mail id and permanent mobile number; while those applying via post should enclose the relevant documents along with the application form.
Once all applications are received, they are screened by UPSC officials to ensure that all eligibility criteria have been met before being accepted as qualified candidates who can take part in the CDS Exam. Once selected, applicants are required to appear at designated centres on scheduled dates and time with original documents such as educational qualifications certificates/marksheets etc., proof of age like birth certificate/school leaving certificate etc., photograph and identity card issued by government authorities such as passport/voter Id card etc..
The written test consists of objective type questions carrying a total weightage of 300 marks which are split equally among all sections: English (100 marks), General Knowledge & Current Affairs (100 marks), Elementary Mathematics (50 marks) and Military Aptitude Test (50 marks). After completing this paper, candidates will be shortlisted based on their performance in each section for further recruitment process which includes interviews/personality tests followed by medical examinations conducted by Army Recruitment Boards located across India.
