The full form of IFS in the Indian Government is Indian Forest Service. It is one of India’s prestigious civil services, and its primary responsibility is to protect and manage the country’s forests and wildlife. The service was established by the Government of India in 1966, under the All India Services Act 1951.

The main objective of the Indian Forest Service (IFS) is to protect India’s forests, wildlife and biodiversity from exploitation and over-exploitation. This includes sustainable management and conservation of forest resources with a view to maintaining ecological balance, protecting soil and water resources, preserving flora and fauna, preventing habitat loss, reducing air pollution, limiting global warming, promoting eco-tourism etc.

One of the key functions of IFS officers is to ensure that all activities related to forests are conducted in an environmentally responsible manner. They also work on projects to rehabilitate degraded lands, conserve wetlands and restore habitats for endangered species such as tigers and elephants. In addition they are involved in developing policies related to forestry management such as watershed development plans, afforestation programs etc.

After successful completion of their training period IFS officers are placed in various posts within the Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF). Some may be appointed as Conservators or Divisional Forest Officers while others may be assigned responsibilities like Project Officer or Deputy Conservator in a Wildlife Sanctuary/National Park or any other forest division across the nation.
