The full form of ‘ITBP’ in the Indian Army is ‘Indo-Tibetan Border Police’. It is a Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) which is responsible for guarding India’s borders with China, Bhutan and Myanmar. The ITBP was formed in 1962 with its main objective being to guard the Indo-China border at the time of war or conflict. The force also has a major role in maintaining security along India’s northern borders.

The ITBP works under the direct control of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India and is one of the five CAPFs set up by an Act of Parliament. The force is headed by an Inspector General who is designated as Director General. All members are appointed by the President on recommendations from the Union Home Minister.

The primary mission of the ITBP is to guard and patrol India’s international boundaries with China, Bhutan and Myanmar, prevent trans-border crimes, smuggling and other illegal activities along these borders. In addition to this, it also performs duties such as disaster management operations during natural disasters like floods and earthquakes, counter insurgency operations, search and rescue operations etc., as may be assigned to it from time to time by the government.

The ITBP is made up of personnel from various states all across India who have been trained for high altitude warfare in extreme weather conditions typical to mountain terrains found near Indo-Chinese border areas. The force has specialized units to perform tasks such as mountaineering, skiing, snow scooter driving etc., which are necessary for survival at high altitudes while patrolling areas close to LAC (Line Of Actual Control).

In order to stay prepared for any kind of eventuality throughout their service tenure, ITBP personnel undergo rigorous physical training regime including drills such as running long distances with heavy backpacks on their backs etc., so that they can remain physically fit even in harsh climatic conditions at high altitudes and maintain vigilance during their duty hours without succumbing to fatigue or stress.

Apart from this, ITBP personnel also attend special courses related to mountain warfare conducted by various institutes like High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS). Such training helps them become better prepared for facing any kind of situation encountered while guarding India’s international borders especially those located close to Line Of Actual Control (LAC).
