Full Form of JEE Main
Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main is an entrance exam for admission to undergraduate engineering programmes in India. The exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). It is a competitive exam that tests the aptitude, mathematical skills and understanding of physics, chemistry and mathematics in students aspiring for admission to various engineering colleges in India.
JEE Main was first conducted in 2013 as a national level entrance exam with two separate papers – Paper 1 and Paper 2. Paper 1 was for students aspiring to take admission into the B.Tech/B.E courses while Paper 2 was meant for those seeking admissions into B.Arch/B.Planning courses. In 2020, a third paper was added – JEE Main (Advanced), which is an all-India examination conducted over two days, used as a basis for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
The JEE Main exam consists of multiple choice questions based on Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Each question carries four marks and there is negative marking for incorrect answers. A student has to score minimum qualifying marks out of 360 marks to be eligible for admissions into various engineering colleges across India offering UG programs in Engineering or Architecture.
In order to appear for JEE Main, candidates must have passed their Class 12 examination from a recognised board with at least five subjects including Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects with English language as one of the other subjects. Candidates who are appearing in their class 12th examination may also apply but they need to produce their passing certificate before taking admissions into any institute accepting JEE Main scores.
The syllabus followed by JEE Main includes topics from classes 11th & 12th prescribed by CBSE Board such as Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics along with few higher level topics like Calculus, Trigonometry etc., which are not included in school syllabus but are important from the point of view of entrance examinations like JEE Main & Advanced etc.,
There will be two sessions per year – January & April session – conducted every year by NTA where candidates can appear maximum three times in both sessions put together within consecutive three years period starting from first attempt made during 2019 onward i.e., till 2021 session only three attempts will be allowed after that no further attempts will be allowed even if candidate fails to qualify in either or both session during these three years period due to any reason or fail to take part due to some unavoidable circumstances even then he/she would not be allowed further attempts beyond this 3 years period i.e., after 2021 session onwards he/she would not be allowed any more attempts even if he/she failed previously during these 3 years period 2019-2021
