NEET, or the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, is an entrance exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to undergraduate medical and dental courses in all Indian colleges/institutes. It is a single-window entrance exam for admission to MBBS and BDS courses in India.

The NTA has recently taken over the responsibility of conducting NEET from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The exam is held in two parts: NEET-UG (Undergraduate) and NEET-PG (Post Graduate). Both exams are designed to assess a candidate’s knowledge, understanding and application of medical science.

NEET-UG is held every year in May or June and it tests the aspirants’ aptitude and knowledge on subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology. A total of 180 multiple choice questions are asked with a time limit of 3 hours. Candidates who qualify this test can apply to any medical college/university across India.

On the other hand, NEET-PG is conducted twice a year in December and April for those aspiring to get into post graduate programs in medicine or dentistry. This examination consists of 300 multiple choice questions with a time limit of 3 hours 30 minutes. Those who qualify this exam are eligible for admission into post graduate programs such as MD, MS or MDS held by various universities/medical colleges across India.

NEET has been made compulsory for all students wanting to pursue MBBS or BDS courses in India from 2019 onwards. However, states have their own criteria for awarding admissions based on their respective rules and regulations set by their governments.

Both NEET-UG and NEET-PG require intense preparation as it tests one’s knowledge on different aspects of medical science along with one’s ability to think logically and apply concepts correctly in order to come up with accurate solutions. The NTA also publishes previous years’ question papers which help aspiring candidates understand the type of questions asked during the examination along with tips on how they can prepare better for it.
