NET, or National Eligibility Test, is a competitive examination conducted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in India to determine eligibility for college and university level teaching positions. It is an entrance exam that assesses the qualifications of candidates seeking admission into post-graduate programs such as MPhil and PhD.

The UGC NET was introduced in 1984 with the purpose of identifying suitable candidates for the post of Assistant Professors and Junior Research Fellowships (JRF). The exam tests the knowledge and understanding of various subjects related to humanities, social sciences, engineering, law, science and technology. It also examines the research aptitude of applicants and their communication skills.

The exam consists of two papers – Paper 1 (General) and Paper 2 (Subject Specific).
