Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, or POK for short, is an important source of political tension between India and Pakistan. The region, which is part of the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region along the Line of Control (LoC) between India and Pakistan, has been the subject of a long-running territorial dispute between the two countries.

The origin of the conflict dates back to 1947 when British India was divided into two independent states – India and Pakistan. At that time, Jammu and Kashmir was an independent state with its own monarch but in October 1947 both countries agreed to a ceasefire line (now known as the Line of Control). As a result, parts of what was then Jammu & Kashmir were left on both sides of the LoC.

In 1949, Pakistan acquired control over parts of what is now referred to as ‘Pakistan Occupied Kashmir’ (POK). This area was officially declared by Pakistan as ‘Azad Jammu & Kashmir’ (AJK), meaning ‘Free Jammu & Kashmir’ but is still regarded by India as part of its own territory. Since then there have been numerous attempts by both countries to resolve this issue through negotiations but no agreement has been reached.

The current situation in POK remains volatile with frequent skirmishes between Indian and Pakistani forces along the LoC due to cross border infiltration from militants based in Pakistan. In addition, there are frequent protests by local people demanding an end to Pakistani occupation in POK as well as greater autonomy for their region.

India has always maintained that it will not accept any solution which involves giving up its claim over POK while Pakistan insists that it will never hand over control of AJK to India until all outstanding disputes are resolved including those related to human rights violations in Indian controlled Kashmir.

Given its strategic importance for both countries – geographically, militarily and economically – resolving the dispute over POK is essential for peace and stability in South Asia. A number of proposals have been put forward by officials from both sides over the years but these have failed to gain traction due to lack of trust between India and Pakistan.

With tensions continuing to simmer in POK, it is clear that any resolution will require a great deal more than simply agreeing on a new name for this contested region; it requires meaningful dialogue between New Delhi and Islamabad so that both sides can come together on issues such as human rights abuses and refugees living in POK who are affected by this ongoing conflict.
