This type of ticket is issued when all the confirmed tickets on a particular train have been booked and no more bookings can be made.

The RAC ticket allows two passengers to share one berth, as long as they both arrive at the station before the departure time. The RAC passengers are required to board the train, and they will be allotted separate berths at some point during their journey – depending upon availability of seats. If there are no vacant berths on the train, then both RAC passengers will have to travel in the same berth until they reach their destination.
