The full form of ‘SSB’ in the Army is ‘Service Selection Board’. The SSB is a board that is responsible for selecting applicants for commissioning into the Indian Armed Forces. It was established in 1948 to screen candidates for entry into the Indian Air Force, Indian Navy and Indian Army. The SSB selection process is an elaborate one which involves psychological tests, group tasks and personal interviews, all of which are aimed at gauging the suitability of the candidate for a career in the armed forces.

The Service Selection Board (SSB) consists of senior officers from all three wings of the armed forces, namely, Army, Navy and Air Force. These officers have extensive experience in assessing potential candidates for service in their respective branches. The board meets every month, or as required by the government and military authorities, to review applications received from aspiring officers and decide who will be selected for commissioning into the military.

The SSB selection process is extremely rigorous and comprehensive. It comprises five stages – Stage I & II screening tests; Group Testing Officers’ Tasks; Psychological Tests; Intelligence Tests; and Personal Interviews. To clear these tests successfully, a candidate must demonstrate physical fitness as well as mental agility and emotional stability.

Stage I & II Screening Tests involve checking basic information such as age eligibility criteria, educational qualifications etc., to ensure that a candidate meets all requirements set by the government before being considered eligible for further consideration by the SSB board members.

Group Testing Officers’ Tasks assess a candidate’s ability to work with others and also evaluates his/her leadership qualities through small group activities like map reading exercises etc., As part of this test, candidates are expected to take charge of a situation effectively while working within time constraints.

Psychological Tests are conducted to measure a candidate’s aptitude towards various roles offered by different branches of the armed forces through written assessments administered by qualified psychologists or psychiatrists on behalf of the SSB. The results obtained from these tests provide insights into how well an individual can handle stress or highly demanding situations while serving in any branch of service.

Intelligence Tests assess general knowledge levels and reasoning abilities including logic-based problems related to mathematical concepts like geometry or trigonometry etc., These tests are designed to determine how quickly a person can think on their feet when faced with complex situations during service life.

Personal Interviews are conducted lastly where each individual applicant is interviewed by two members from the SSB board who evaluate his/her answers based on certain predetermined criteria such as communication skills, confidence level etc., This helps them ascertain whether an individual possesses traits that make him/her suitable for service in any branch of service in particular.
