The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is a maritime, military and law enforcement organization that operates under the Department of Homeland Security. The USCG has many responsibilities including the protection of U.S. waterways, the enforcement of federal laws at sea, the safety of commercial vessels, the maintenance of aids to navigation, and conducting search and rescue operations.

The USCG was established in 1790 by Alexander Hamilton as part of the US Revenue Cutter Service. It was later reorganized as part of the US Navy during World War I and then returned to its original mission in 1939 when it became an independent service within the Treasury Department known as the Coast Guard. Since 1967, it has been part of the Department of Transportation and since 2003 it is now part of the Department of Homeland Security.

The USCG has 11 missions that are divided into four major categories: Maritime Safety, Maritime Security, Stewardship and National Defense. In terms of maritime safety they are responsible for enforcing safety regulations on vessels operating in US waters, protecting port facilities from security threats and conducting search and rescue operations to assist those in distress. In terms of maritime security they are responsible for detecting illegal activities related to drug trafficking or terrorism as well as enforcing immigration laws on boats entering US waters. They also conduct fisheries enforcement patrols to ensure compliance with fishing regulations and perform pollution control patrols to prevent oil spills from occurring in US waters.

In terms of stewardship they are responsible for maintaining aids to navigation such as buoys and lighthouses which help mariners navigate safely through dangerous waters; providing marine environmental protection services such as responding to oil spills; managing living marine resources; regulating recreational boating activities; and preserving coastal habitats through partnerships with federal agencies such as NOAA Fisheries Service. Finally in national defense they provide support to homeland security tasks such as protecting ports from terrorist threats; providing high-speed intercept vessels which can be used for pursuing drug traffickers or terrorists; performing counter-narcotics operations; providing surveillance assistance when requested by other agencies; providing assistance during large-scale natural disasters or civil disturbances; serving in overseas theaters during war time operations; and providing other military services when requested by other branches such as search & rescue missions or medical evacuation flights.

The USCG is one of five branches within the United States Armed Forces which includes Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard respectively. Together these five branches make up what is known as America’s Unified Defense Forces (UDF). The USCG plays a vital role in protecting our nation’s shores from drug trafficking, terrorism, illegal immigration & environmental hazards while also safeguarding our freedoms & rights at home & abroad through their various missions & programs.
