The full form of ‘DGP’ in police is “Director General of Police”. This title is given to the highest ranking police officer in each Indian state or union territory. DGP stands for the head of police force in a state and is responsible for overall law and order situation in that particular state.

The post of Director General of Police (DGP) was created by the Government of India to give more autonomy to the state governments in managing their respective police forces. The DGP also serves as advisor to the State Government on matters relating to policing and security. He/she is responsible for implementing government policies at the State level, coordinating with other departments, maintaining law and order, detecting crime, protecting human rights, controlling communal violence, investigating criminal cases and providing training to police personnel.

The office of Director General of Police is held by an IPS (Indian Police Service) officer who has completed at least 5 years of service in the cadre. He/she is appointed by the Governor or President after due consultation with Chief Minister or Prime Minister respectively. The tenure of a DGP varies from state to state but it generally ranges between 2-3 years.

In addition to his/her own duties, a DGP also provides guidance and training to subordinate officers including Additional Directors General (ADG), Inspector Generals (IG), Deputy Inspectors General (DIG), Superintendents of Police (SP), Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP) etc. He/she plays an important role in developing strategies for crime prevention and control as well as enhancing public safety through better utilization of resources available at his disposal like human resource development, technology upgradation etc.

Apart from being a leader among leaders within the police force hierarchy, a DGP also enjoys certain privileges such as free accommodation provided by the government along with other facilities like official vehicle etc., apart from their regular salary packages which are decided according to their rank and experience within service year after year.
