FIR stands for First Information Report, and it is a legal document that is used to record the initial details of a crime reported to the police. In India, it is an important legal document as it provides evidence for further investigation and prosecution of an accused.

The FIR is the first report made by the complainant or any other witness of a cognizable offence in order to initiate criminal proceedings. A cognizable offence is one in which the police have the authority to make arrests without an order from a magistrate. An FIR can be lodged at any police station, even if it does not have jurisdiction over the area where the crime occurred.

The purpose of filing an FIR is to give detailed information about what happened so that the police can begin their investigation into the case. This includes details such as who was involved, when and where it happened, what happened, and any witnesses or other people who may have knowledge of events related to the incident. The FIR also serves as an official record of the incident.

When filing an FIR, one must provide accurate and detailed information regarding all relevant facts associated with a case; such information should include names, addresses, descriptions, etc., and must be signed by both parties involved in making statements. Furthermore, if there are any witnesses present during or after occurrence of a crime then their statement should also be included in this report along with their signatures or thumb impressions for authentication purposes.

In India, filing an FIR is mandatory for certain types of crimes like murder and rape under Section 154(1) of Code Of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). Failing to do so could lead to punishment with imprisonment up to six months or fine or both according to Section 202(1) CrPC . Therefore it is important that individuals take appropriate steps towards lodging an FIR whenever required.

Once filed with a police station ,the officer in charge has 24 hours within which he/she needs to enter details into General Diary (GD), which serves as a record book maintained at each police station recording all complaints received daily at that station along with actions taken by officers on those complaints . Then officer will investigate into matter based on complaint filed & ascertain truthfulness & evidence behind statements given in complaint . After thorough investigation ,police will either file charge sheet against accused person (if enough evidence found) before Magistrate court under section 173 CrPC or close case due to lack of evidence & inform same thing back to Complainant & concerned court through final report under section 169 CrPC .
