The full form of ‘NDA’ in politics is ‘National Democratic Alliance’. The NDA was formed in 1998 by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and several other political parties. It is currently the largest party alliance in India and its main aim is to ensure a stable government at the centre.

The National Democratic Alliance was formed after the 1998 Indian general election, which saw the BJP emerging as the single largest party in terms of vote share and seat share but falling short of the majority mark required to form a government on its own. As such, it sought out allies from other parties, eventually forming an alliance with multiple smaller regional parties that shared a similar ideology.

This coalition has held power for most of India’s post-independence history since 1998, forming governments which have been led by various prime ministers from member parties. The first NDA government was led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee who served three successive terms as Prime Minister until 2004 when it lost to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA). After UPA’s 10-year stint in power, BJP regained control in 2014 under Narendra Modi’s leadership and has since then been implementing its agenda through NDA’s policies and decisions.

The NDA is ideologically driven by Hindutva, an ideology that promotes Hinduism as the basis for India’s national identity and seeks to protect its interests both domestically and internationally. This has given rise to some controversial policies like Article 370 abrogation, CAA etc., which have caused much debate amongst citizens of different beliefs. In spite of this, however, NDA remains one of India’s most popular alliances with immense support from its core constituents including BJP supporters as well as those belonging to its allied parties.

Apart from ideological differences between members, there are also differences on economic policy front within the alliance itself with some advocating for more liberal reforms while others favouring more socially conservative approaches. This often leads to disagreements amongst members but these are usually resolved amicably due to their mutual interest in maintaining stability at centre.

In recent years, NDA has seen major gains with BJP winning elections in many states across India due largely to its strong grassroots presence and organisational capabilities as well as support from its allies who benefit greatly due to their association with it. Despite criticism over certain policies, NDA continues to be immensely popular among Indians who see it as providing them with much needed stability at center amidst turbulent times wherein national security remains a major concern for all citizens irrespective of political affiliations or ideologies they may hold dear.
