BSF stands for Border Security Force and is an armed force of the Indian government. It is a paramilitary police force which guards India’s land borders with neighboring countries, such as Pakistan and Bangladesh. It is also responsible for other duties like anti-smuggling operations, coastal security, riverine operations, counter-insurgency operations, immigration control and VVIP security.

The BSF was established in 1965 following the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. It is one of the five Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) under the Ministry of Home Affairs and is primarily tasked with guarding India’s international borders during peace time and preventing transnational crime. The main responsibility of the BSF is to guard India’s land borders from unauthorized intrusions. The force also assists other agencies in dealing with insurgency in their respective states. The BSF remains one of the most powerful forces in India and has been involved in several high-profile operations such as Operation Blue Star (1984), Operation Black Thunder (1988), Operation Vijay (1999) and Operation Parakram (2001).

The strength of the BSF is now more than 2 lakh personnel who are divided into various battalions located along different sectors of India’s borders. Each battalion consists of anywhere between 300 to 1500 personnel depending on the terrain, type of border and requirement. The force operates both air and water crafts for patrolling its jurisdiction areas as well as conducting search and rescue operations if needed.

The BSF has a unique culture that makes it distinct from other CAPFs or defence forces. It has its own set of traditions that are followed by all personnel regardless of ranks or seniority levels. A few examples include Uniform Day where all personnel wear their most impressive uniform to show their pride; Flag Hoisting Ceremony where a flag hoisted on a 150 feet tall flag mast at every battalion Headquarters; Independence Day Parade where BSF personnel march wearing traditional uniforms while displaying their skills; NCC Camps organised by each battalion to provide training to cadets; sports competitions like Cross Country Race, Yoga Competition etc.; celebrations like Diwali, Holi etc.; cultural activities which involve singing patriotic songs etc.,
