The full form of COBRA in the Indian Army is “Commando Battalions for Resolute Action”. The COBRA Force was established in 2009 by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) as a specialized unit to conduct counter-insurgency operations in the Maoist-affected areas of central India.

The primary mission of the COBRA battalions is to take action against Left Wing Extremists (LWEs) who are active in central India, especially in Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha. The main aim is to neutralize and contain LWE activities, prevent them from expanding their influence and disrupt their organizational capabilities. To accomplish this task, they use a combination of offensive and defensive tactics such as aggressive patrolling, cordon and search operations, ambushes, intelligence gathering operations and psychological operations.

COBRA personnel are highly trained commandos who have undergone rigorous physical training as well as specialized training in jungle warfare techniques such as rappelling, marksmanship and explosives handling. They also receive specialized instruction on how to conduct intelligence-led operations against the Maoists. In addition to this, they are equipped with advanced weapons like AK-47s and sniper rifles along with night vision devices for night combat operations.

The COBRA force has been successful in its mission so far and has been able to contain LWE activities across central India over the past few years. It has successfully conducted numerous operations against Maoists which have resulted in significant losses for them both financially and militarily.
