Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is an autonomous body established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The FSSAI is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety. It lays down science-based standards for food items and regulates their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption.

The FSSAI was established in August 2011 as part of a major overhaul of India’s food safety regulations. It replaced the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954 and the Fruit Products Order, 1955. This new body has been endowed with greater powers to ensure the safety of the Indian food supply chain.

The primary objectives of FSSAI are to regulate and supervise the manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import of food products; lay down science-based standards for various foods; promote public awareness about safe practices related to hygiene and sanitation; frame regulations on hygienic standards for food businesses; issue licenses for food production units; conduct regular inspections; take action against substandard or unsafe food items; facilitate risk-based product recalls if required; provide technical advice to the government on scientific aspects of foods; create an accreditation system for testing laboratories; create a national data base on food safety incidents across India; set up a regulatory mechanism to manage adverse events related to foods etc.

The FSSAI is headed by a Chief Executive Officer (CEO), who is supported by various divisions within the organization such as Legal & Regulatory Affairs Division, Quality Assurance & Compliance Division, Monitoring & Enforcement Division etc. The organization also has several regional offices located across India that are responsible for enforcing its regulations in their respective regions.

FSSAI works in close collaboration with other government departments like Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (MoAFW), Department of Consumer Affairs etc., as well as with international organizations such as WHO (World Health Organization). It also works closely with civil society organizations such as CSE (Centre for Science & Environment) which are actively involved in creating awareness about safe practices related to hygiene and sanitation among consumers.

In order to make sure that all foods comply with its standards, FSSAI has launched a unique program called ‘Eat Right India’ which encourages people to make nutritious dietary choices while at home or eating out. This program has been designed based on five core principles – Eat Healthy Food, Eat Safe Food, Eat Right Quantity Of Food (Portions), Eat Clean And Hygienic Food At Home And Eating Out And Be Active Regularly To Stay Fit And Healthy – that emphasize healthy eating habits among individuals. With this initiative FSSAI aims to reduce cases related to malnutrition in India by encouraging people to adopt healthy lifestyle habits such as making healthier dietary choices while at home or eating out.
