Full Form of NET
The full form of ‘NET’ in education is ‘National Eligibility Test’. This test, also known as UGC-NET, is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC). The NET exam is a competitive examination that tests a student’s knowledge and ability to teach at universities and colleges in India.
The main purpose of this exam is to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) or for Assistant Professor or equivalent positions in Indian universities and colleges. It has been deemed necessary for universities and colleges to ensure that only qualified candidates are appointed to teaching posts, thus making NET an important tool for recruitment.
To be eligible for NET, aspiring candidates must have completed their Master’s degree from a recognised university or institute in India with a minimum aggregate score of 55% marks or an equivalent grade point average (GPA). Candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes/OBC categories must hold a minimum aggregate score of 50%. Candidates belonging to Persons with Disability category must hold a minimum aggregate score of 45%.
The exam consists of two papers: Paper I and Paper II. Paper I comprises questions related to General Aptitude while Paper II tests candidate’s knowledge in their chosen subject area. Both papers are divided into three sections: A, B and C. Each paper has 50 multiple choice questions carrying 2 marks each. The duration for each paper is 1 hour 30 minutes where no extra time is given for answering any question.
Candidates who clear the cut off marks set by NTA will be declared qualified under UGC-NET. After qualifying UGC-NET, candidates can apply for Junior Research Fellow (JRF) position or be recruited as an Assistant Professor in one of the many recognized universities/colleges across India. The validity period for this exam is two years from the date of declaration i.e., if you qualify today then you are eligible till two years from today’s date.
