Full Form of SAARC

The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is an intergovernmental organization that was established in 1985 by seven South Asian nations: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Nepal and Bhutan. The purpose of the organization is to promote economic cooperation and regional integration among these countries.

The primary focus of SAARC is to encourage economic growth and prosperity through increased trade and investment between member countries. In addition to this, the organization also works on issues such as poverty alleviation, environmental protection, human rights and women’s empowerment. The main objectives of SAARC are to create a platform for dialogue among its members in order to foster peace and security in the region; to promote mutual trust, understanding and respect; to strengthen collective self-reliance among member states; and to accelerate social progress in all aspects of life.

SAARC has taken several initiatives over the years such as the establishment of a free trade agreement among member countries (SAFTA), which aims at increasing intra-regional trade by reducing tariffs on goods originating from within the region; setting up regional forums for dialogue on various issues such as poverty reduction strategies; establishing regional institutions like the South Asia Development Fund (SADF) which provides financial assistance for development projects; launching projects like the South Asia Water Resources Management (SAWRM) program which seeks to reduce water scarcity in the region by developing common water management strategies; etc.

In addition to these initiatives, SAARC has also organized several high-level meetings between its members since its inception. These meetings have provided opportunities for members to discuss issues related to regional cooperation such as political stability, economic development and social progress. As part of these meetings, members have also signed several agreements including ones relating to terrorism prevention, disaster management and energy security.

The success of SAARC can be attributed not only to its members’ commitment towards achieving their goals but also due to its effective organizational structure that enables it to effectively implement its initiatives. The organization has a General Secretariat headed by a Secretary General who is elected every three years by consensus among all members. It also has two other bodies – The Standing Committee composed of representatives from each member country which meets annually or when required; and The Council of Ministers which serves as a decision-making body that meets twice a year or whenever necessary .

Through effective implementation of its initiatives by leveraging its organizational structure , SAARC is slowly but surely contributing towards building unity among its members states through increased regional cooperation . This in turn will ultimately lead towards greater prosperity for all member states .
