Union Public Service Commission, more commonly known as UPSC, is an independent body of the Government of India. It is responsible for conducting examinations and selecting candidates for various posts in the Central Government, including Indian Administrative Services (IAS), Indian Police Services (IPS) and other services like Indian Engineering Services (IES).

UPSC was established in 1926 and is headquartered in New Delhi. It has seven members who are appointed by the President of India. The Chairman of UPSC is appointed for a term of six years or until he reaches the age of 65, whichever is earlier.

The main roles and responsibilities of UPSC are to conduct examinations for recruitment to various posts in the Central Government and its agencies. These exams include Civil Services Examination (CSE) which is conducted annually to select IAS/IPS officers; and Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE) which is conducted twice a year to select officers for military forces such as Army, Navy and Air Force. In addition to this, UPSC also conducts several other exams such as Indian Economic Service/Indian Statistical Service Exam (IES/ISS), Geologists Exam, Engineering Service Exam, National Defence Academy Exam etc.

UPSC also has responsibility to advise the Government on disciplinary matters related to All India Services Officers like IAS/IPS. Apart from this it also advices government in framing rules related to services under its purview. The commission decides cut off marks for recruitment process based on number of vacancies available during that period.

UPSC exams are considered one of the toughest competitive examinations due to their high level complexity and scope for selection rounds.
